Roman immersion in Provence: a journey to the heart of antiquity

Roman remains are all the traces left by the Roman Empire in the cities and on the roads it occupied for centuries. They can be recognized in the architecture, but also in the way cities were organized around a forum, a theatre or baths, as if the city of today still carried within it the memory of Antiquity.

In Provence, this imprint is everywhere: bridges, aqueducts, paved roads and temples that have stood the test of time with remarkable elegance.

My role is to connect these places together and give you the keys to reading each site with a fresh perspective.

Major Roman sites to visit along the route from Avignon

Provence is full of ancient monuments that are now listed or recognized by UNESCO.

In Nîmes, we can visit the Roman arena, the Maison Carrée, and the Tour Magne, a remnant of the old city walls. On the Gard River, the Pont du Gard impresses with its 1st-century aqueduct and its surrounding landscape. In Orange, the ancient theater and triumphal arch illustrate Roman power. In Arles, we find an arena, a theater, and other major archaeological remains.
